Speedball 2 Evolution is an conversion of the classic sport game release by Tower Studios.

This is a remake of the classic sports game that first appeared on the Atari ST in 1988 with the definitive version appearing on the Commodore Amiga.

The game itself, puts you in charge of a team of players who play in the SpeedBall arena. The game has several ways of scoring points and it is the team who has the most points at the end of the two halves that wins the game.

If you wish to get involved in the management side, you are able to train your team up using the cash you get from in game and at the end of the match. You can also scout or transfer players. The management options are fairly basic, but training the teams is a must to survive in the higher leagues.

During the game you will encounter various power ups and pick up that can help your team to win the match. Some of the pick ups reduce the opponents abilites or increase your teams. You can even knockdown or freeze the other team.

The game is controlled either by the cursor keys and the space bar. You just tap the spacebar to throw or tackle in the way you are facing.

The graphics and sound are very good, people who played the original with be very happy. The graphics still look good today for new players too. If you know this game you will be happy to hear the shouts of “Ice Cream” for the vendors.

Having played the iOS version recently, this version is slightly easier to control and feels a little more like the original gameplay wise.

On the upside:

  • Great Retro remake
  • Fast and furious game play

On the downside:

  • The game can become fairly easy once you get a good tactic going.
  • Lack of a multiple player option

Overall, this is an excellent conversion of the original game. It is a great little sports game and is very fun to play. I am glad that such a good port was made, and fans of the original game should not be disappointed. I did mark the game down a little for the lack of multiplayer, but hopefully this will be added in the future.
