ATARI’S GREATEST HITS – REVIEW (78%)

16 Apr

Atari’s Greatest Hits is a collection of 100 arcade retros classics, released by Atari.

This application is a retro dream containing 100 retro arcade games, however, I would not call them all classics. When you download the free application you only get Pong for free.

There are some classic games to download, these include:

  • Asteroids
  • Battlezone
  • Centipede
  • Crystal Castles
  • Missile Command
  • Super Breakout
  • Tempest

The in-app purchases allow you to buy the Arcade version of these, and three other games in the pack, the other will be the Atari 2600 version and then two other games that have a similar style.

Multiplayer is available on some of the games, but not many.

The controls for the game vary depending on the game. Some of the controls are good, others terrible. As this is a univeral application it appears that some developers forgot this and the virtual d-pad so far for the edge of the iPad, you have to change the way you grip the device in order to play.

The graphics and sound are as the original retro game. So do not expect anything great. The user interface is good, but only works in portrait, with no landscape mode.

If you are a big fan of these games, then you will probably best off just buying the complete set, otherwise, you may be better off buying the game packs individually and selecting the games of most interest to you.

On the upside:

  • Reliving your young
  • Some excellent Retro classics

On the downside:

  • Some of the iOS are not great, with the controls too far into the middle of the screen (on iPad version).
  • Lots of the games are heavily dated.
  • It is a shame that Atari did not offer any try before you buy options

Overall, if you are old enough to remember the Atari 2600 then this application is a great trip down memory lane, however, you will find yourself only playing some games once. There are several that have stood the test of time well as are still playable. The application has some control issues, but these could easily be fixed with an update. If you love your retro this is a must have, if not, avoid as some of the older games will make you hate them more.
