Max and the magic marker for iPad is a platform / physics based puzzle game released by Electronic Arts Nederlands B.V.
The game puts you into the role of Max who receives a mysterious marker in the mail, and accidently releases a monster into his drawings. Max draws a picture of himself to chase down the monster.
The basics of the game, is you need to guide Max through a platform puzzle, you are able to move left and right, jump and push items within the puzzle. However, what makes this platform game special is you can get ink within the game, and from this you can draw lines and platforms for the cartoon Max to use. You can even pause the game and draw, this technique is vital for some of the later levels.
The game is controlled by tapping the virtual buttons for movement and jumping etc, anywhere else on the screen will draw (if you have ink available).
There are 58 levels to the game currently, over three different area (home, pirate and robot). Once you have completed a level you can go back to any level and try it again to try and obtain the three stars available (Angry Bird style).
There are three different inks to collect on each level, marker ink for drawing, white ink (collection all of these on a level to get one of the stars) and hidden black ink (which you need to solve a puzzle to get.)
The graphics and sound are very good, and are perfect for this style of game.
On the upside:
- Nice platform game.
- Some excellent puzzles.
- Around fun.
On the downside:
- A few stability issues if your iPad 1 is low on memory, a reboot should fix these.
- A little short lived (about three hours to complete, without all stars), but does have replayability.
- Not a universal app, so you have to buy seperately for the iPhone / iPod Touch.
Overall, I am very impress with this game, there have been several similar games in the past, but not to this standard and quality. Some puzzles are tricky, but can normally be skipped if you get stuck. I personal found this one of the most enjoyable games I have placed on iOS in some time. This game came out and slipped under the radar of lots of online sites, which is a real shame, as I think it is going to be one of the sleeper hits of 2011. I highly recommend you add this game to your collection.
