procreate is a digital painting application released by Savage Interactive Pty Ltd.

This application is a professional drawing package for the iPad.

The basics of the application, allow you to create images directly on the iPad. The drawing tools available are simple, but fully customisable. The application feels like a digital canvas that an artist can pick up and get to work on.

The application gives you eight default brushes, but these can be fully customised and added to, you can even add photos and prints into the brushes. You also have smudge tools, eraser, layers and a full colour palette. The colour palette shows the colour in use, however, it just looks like a black square when you first open the application, so until you click on it you have no idea what it does.

The user interface is very good with and is very easy to use. You can also pitch to zoom for fine detail work.

On the upside:

  • Well designed user interfaces.
  • Excellent drawing tool

On the downside:

  • You will need to play with the application for a few minutes to learn the tools available (no help button)
  • Can only get pictures out via email or saving to the camera roll at present.

Overall, this is a very good drawing package. With a few tweaks this could become a must go to art application. There is a lot of protential here and some of the brush effects are excellent. It is priced a little high compare with some of the other drawing applications, but with some additional tweaks it will be worth the price.
